The vast majority of the British public is not planning to watch the new series of Channel 4 reality TV show ‘Big Brother’, research on behalf of the Sun newspaper has found.

Only 13% say that they will be watching the eleventh and final series of the show when it starts up again this week, while a massive 78% say that they will not.

And those who will be watching are likely to be younger rather than older people. 20% of 18-24 year olds say they will watch the new series, compared to only seven percent of people aged 55 years and over.

Since its launch on 18th July 2000, Big Brother has never failed to capture headlines and has launched the media careers of many of its contestants, most notably the late Jade Goody, who died of cancer last year. However, the survey results indicate that Big Brother may well have outstayed its welcome on British television.

Not only are the majority of people not planning to watch the show, many are also seem pleased that this series will be Big Brother’s last. When asked how the fact that this will be the last series of Big Brother aired on Channel 4 makes them feel, a substantial 62% said ‘delighted’, while only seven percent said ‘dismayed’.

81% agreed with the statement ‘Big Brother is past its sell by date and should not have gone on as long as it has’, while only one in ten people agreed with the statement ‘Big Brother has been a familiar part of British summers for ten years and should continue’.
